The art of cleaning a suspended ceiling
A cautionary tale
After painting its suspended ceilings, a major department store found that you could stand in one corner and hear a conversation in the opposite corner. In addition, though the store as a whole was brighter, the light quality was 'all wrong' and 'somehow unnatural'.
...We were called in. After examining the ceiling, we said that we could do nothing about the problem: the ceiling had been ruined and needed to be replaced. When they called in a firm to do this work, the store got a shock when they heard the price.
...We learned later that one of the reasons we'd been called in was that the Health and Safety Inspectorate had visited the premises and presented the store with an ultimatum on their ceilings (postscript: we now clean the store's new suspended ceilings on a contract basis).
Dont ruin your ceilings with expensive methods that dont do the job.
Coaters and painters tell you their methods of dealing with dirty ceilings are best. Do you believe them? READ ON AND FIND OUT WHAT PAINTING AND COATING DO TO SUSPENDED CEILINGS
- Painting and coating lower the fire rating of your suspended ceiling - so much so that most tile manufacturers cancel their warranty if you use those methods
-
seal dirt and germs into suspended ceiling tiles so they rot slowly from the inside outward, giving off potentially dangerous fumes
-
stick suspended ceiling tiles to your grid, leave odours, and can turn your office from a pleasant place of business into an echo chamber
-
disrupt your business - often quite dramatically - because they cannot usually be done outside of working hours.
- Stains often bleed through painted or coated suspended ceilings.
Of course, you could replace your suspended ceiling: in fact if you've destroyed it by painting it or coating it, this may be your only sensible option. But replacement is a very, very expensive operation, and it disrupts your business more than you would have thought possible. You may even need official authorisation to get rid of the (potentially lethal) resulting mess!
